22 Oct Locals excited about existing and emerging industry opportunities
Hundreds of attendees took part in Gladstone Engineering Alliance’s annual Major Industry Conference in early October, keen to hear the latest on our region’s current and emerging industrial opportunities.
This year saw the conference expand to a two-day event to include the inaugural CQH2 Hydrogen Forum, with speakers from Sumitomo, Stanwell and Fortescue Future Industries, amongst others, on hand to talk about all things relating to the emerging hydrogen industry.
We asked conference attendees about what project or projects they were most excited about for the Gladstone Region and why?
Upton Engineering & Manufacturing
I’m excited about the projects being undertaken by existing industry, where they’re brining in new initiatives and upgrading processes, and new industry such as hydrogen. There is a strong focus on Australian-made and locally sourced suppliers and products, which is great to see.
There’s lots to look forward to in terms of opportunities at the moment. I’m particularly excited about the Alpha HPA’s HPA First Project. It’s brand-new technology, and they’re also going to be tapping into existing industry such as their offtake arrangement with Orica.
I’m particularly excited about the focus on renewables at the moment. It’s great to see diversification of industry in the Gladstone Region, which will bring about a lot of opportunities for locals.
All projects are pretty exciting right now, Gladstone is a hub of industry. Existing industry are doing infrastructure upgrades, which is great to see, and there’s lots of new projects coming up that we’re looking forward to.
Existing industry like QAL, Rio Tinto Yarwun and BSL have got a lot of exciting infrastructure upgrades and developments happening at the moment, such as QAL’s 5 Year Environmental Improvement Program. But hydrogen is extremely exciting for Gladstone moving forward.

The Stanwell Hydrogen Project. It’s not a minor project and it will be a great thing for the region. The infrastructure required to support the project will be beneficial for the whole Mt Larcom community.
