20 May Locals hooked up on the HookUp
With 3,666 entrants, 10,000 visitors to Bray Park, 52 sponsors, 27 partners and over 400 volunteers the Boyne Tannum HookUp really is a community event.
Australia’s biggest family fishing competition was back this year after being cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, and anglers could not have been happier, turning out in force to try their luck and go in the running to win over $375,000 in prizes and giveaways.
Boyne Tannum HookUp Committee President Jennifer McGuire said this year’s event, which ran from April 30 to May 2, was “amazing family fishing, as always”.
“Weather wasn’t the best for offshore fishing this year, which meant anglers and families kept to the rivers, inlets and Awoonga Dam,” she said.
“And we had more live fish weigh-ins than ever before with over 700 fish weighed and safely released.
“We are also pleased that after years of anglers asking for it, we were able to set up our first ever weigh-in station at Gladstone Marine Park (VMR) thanks to our community partner, Gladstone Locals hooked on the HookUp Sportsfishing Club, who undertook the massive task.”
Ms McGuire said while it was great to be able to bring the event back in 2021, there was a lot of work involved to bring back a COVID-proof HookUp.
“It took a lot of work to ensure that the COVID-proofing of the event complied with the Queensland Chief Health Officer’s requirements,” she said.
“So to see it come together so positively is extremely rewarding, and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our committee and in fact all our volunteers.”
Planning for the 2022 HookUp is already underway, and Ms McGuire said the team was always looking for volunteers.
“Being involved in the HookUp is a great way to give back to your community, so if you’re interested in becoming a part of the committee I would definitely encourage you to get in touch and see how you can be involved,” she said.
