A message from Peter

2016 has been another eventful year for GPC, as we reached a new record of more than 116 million tonnes of trade across our three ports of Gladstone, Bundaberg and Rockhampton in the 2015/16 financial year.

This year also saw the historic closure of coal operations at our Barney Point Terminal in Gladstone and we have commenced work on transitioning the facility into a multi-commodity terminal. GPC welcomed the increased economic development opportunities for the region as the new cruise ship industry came to Gladstone.

GPC’s Port of Bundaberg has had an exciting last 18 months with the approval and commencement of construction of the new Knauf plasterboard manufacturing facility at the Port, the commencement of wood pellet exports and the first exports of silica sand. More recently, the State Government announced that they are investigating the potential establishment of a State Development Area in Bundaberg, which would incorporate areas within and adjacent to the Port. This could see total throughput from Bundaberg increased significantly from the current average of 350,000 tonnes per year.

GPC’s Port Alma has a solid future as a significant shipping terminal and we continue to look at ways in which we can diversify our product and customer base across the terminal.

We continued to invest heavily in our communities in 2016 by providing financial and in-kind support through our Community Investment Program. During the 2016/17 financial year, GPC will invest over $2 million into the community through the program, and through the provision and maintenance of our Marina and Spinnaker Parklands and the East Shores Precinct.

2017 is set to be another significant year for GPC as we look to commence works on Stage 1B of the East Shores Precinct and continue to focus on maximising the efficiencies in our shipping channels as trade through the Port of Gladstone continues to grow.

On behalf of Gladstone Ports Corporation, I would like to thank you for your support in 2016. I wish you and your families a very safe and merry Christmas, and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
