Sensory CQ Light in the Dark

Local artists Jennifer Hollstein and Jason Koning have recently launched their nine film-inspired sculptures at the Capricorn Film Festival in Yeppoon. “Sensory CQ Light in the Dark is a visually stimulating and eclectic collection of emotive lighting installations inspired by well-loved films,” said Jennifer. “After the success of 'Sensory CQ Art in the Dark' in early 2022, which featured a walking trail of glow-in-the-dark sculptures along the foreshores area of Yeppoon, the 2023 edition sees the sculptures concentrated in Beaman Park, close to the film festival's main venue of the Town Hall. The sculptures come to life in the evenings, illuminated with UV and fluorescent lighting to give the sense of a magical playground.” Having spent several years working globally as a professional diver in conservation and research, Jennifer is very passionate about using recycled materials wherever possible. This prevents the items from entering landfill of the ocean, and encourages viewers to think creatively about the cycle of life of everyday, household objects. “As nature lovers, both Jason and I are constantly reflecting on how our creative practice and lifestyles impact the environment around us, presenting us with the opportunity to be more mindful and sustainable in how we live and create. The intention of our recycled and environmental artwork is to encourage and contribute towards local and global dialogues around sustainability, where we see ourselves and our future existence as part of nature. “Our creative process is like an adventure, which is probably why it can be so exhilarating. Often, the vision we have demands us to think creatively about what kinds of materials we could use, almost like finding the pieces of a puzzle. Whereas at other times, we might encounter a random object and it sets alight a whole new world of creative possibilities. I often joke that Jason is my muse, but it's true that there is a creative whirlwind between us that grows the more we discuss and work on projects together.” Many of the materials used in the project were sourced from op-shops, transfer station shops and Facebook marketplace, as well as members of the community donating items that were previously destined for landfill. Examples include CDs, soft plastics, bird cages, musical instruments, blind slats, glassware, children's toys, jewellery, crab pots, and plenty of fishing line. “Using fishing materials in my work is of particular importance to me. As a diver, I’ve encountered creatures on many occasions who were struggling to survive, having been caught in ghost nets and traps. It’s my way of communicating the urgent need for respectful fishing practices, especially here in CQ where fishing is a huge part of the culture. Jason feels that there needs to be more conversations and actions taken around personal waste management in CQ, as littering and illegal dumping are big problems here. “This sculpture collection has been inspired by films that feature famous motifs so that they may be recognisable by the general public, but also those that emit a sense of awe. For example, transforming a second-hand wardrobe into the winter wonderland of Narnia allows members of the public to peer inside and just for a moment, imagine what it might be like to be a part of the story. “My favourite sculpture in this collection is called, 'Meet the Soundtrack' after the scene of the same name in Disney's 1940 movie, 'Fantasia'. Watching it now as a musician also interested in abstract art, I can really appreciate the exciting colours and shapes of the soundtrack's 'character' as it ripples and quivers with the vibrations of the orchestral instruments resonating through it. I was really excited to create a kinetic sculpture too as I love how the environment can impact a sculpture's behaviour. Jason's very fond of the sculpture, 'The Mushroom Forest' from 'Alice in Wonderland' as he has spent a lot of time building it using the tools of his trade as a welder. Watching the individual mushrooms develop makes him appreciate the process, and having tried to make one myself, it makes me appreciate his strength! Jason is also a big fan of the mixed media combination of timber and steel, and he even created a beautiful weaving for one mushroom's top with recycled cloth from another sculpture.”
