20 May Small Business Month – Illuminate Luxury Candle Co.
MAY IS SMALL BUSINESS MONTH IN QUEENSLAND.
Small businesses make a vital contribution to our local economy, and to celebrate we have profiled four local small business owners.
Meet Tamara Norton from Illuminate Luxury Candle Co.
Opening a shop on Goondoon Street this year was the best decision Tamara Norton made for her business.
“It was a big risk, but it has paid off immensely,” Tamara said.
“I had been wanting to do it for years, and I am glad I finally did. The support I have received from not only my regular customers, but the wider community has been fantastic.”
After taking up candle making as a hobby seven years ago in Airlie Beach, while pregnant with her daughter, Tamara started out selling her creations to family and friends.
“I quickly moved to markets and then having pop-up shops all over Central Queensland, but then the business outgrew my home, so I decided to take the plunge and open a retail shopfront,” she said.
“We manufacture on-site and sell everything from candles and reed diffusers to home fragrances, and we also stock other local handmade businesses products including macrame and resin art.”
Tamara said she would encourage home business owners thinking about making the move to retail shop owner to “think about it for a long time”.
“Assess all of your current outgoings and stock control, and really look at the cost of outfitting a shop,” she said.
“It is definitely challenging, but if you can afford it, do it!”
