06 May Local athletes shine at championships
Our region’s little athletics have been busy running, jumping, and shot putting their way to victory with excellent results at recent state and national competitions.
Gladstone Athletics Club members took part in the 2021 Queensland Athletics Championships and the McDonald Championships in March, and the Athletics Australia Track & Field Championships and the Coles Little Athletics National Challenge in April.
Club President Shane Gibson said competitors represented the Gladstone Region “beyond any expectations”.
“When competing at this high-level the competition is always tough. But our athletes were up to the task and we are extremely proud of everyone who placed and everyone who participated,” he said.
At the Queensland Athletics Championships Riley Townsend placed third in discus (U14 boys) with a distance of 38.64m and third in shotput (U14 boys) with a distance of 11.90m, while Milly Sharpe placed first in the 3000m racewalk (U14 girls) with a time of 16:01.78.
While at the Coles Little Athletics National Challenge Dylan Gardiner placed eighth in the 200m (U13 boys) with a time of 26.52 seconds, and Milly Sharpe placed third in the 1500m (U13 girls) racewalk with a time of 8:05.48.
Riley Townsend placed eighth in shotput (U14 boys) with a distance of 12.05m and eighth in discus (U14 boys) with a distance of 37.52m, while Milly Sharpe came second in the 3000m racewalk (U14 girls) with a time of 15:55.58, at the Athletics Australia Track & Field Championships.
Impressively, 40 of the 47 Gladstone Athletics Club athletes that nominated in the regional championships in February, qualified to compete in the McDonald’s State Championships.
Gladstone Athletics Club, which boasts 104 members as part of their 20/21 season, offers track, hurdles, shotput, discus, javelin, long jump, high jump and triple jump for athletes aged five years and up.
Their season runs from August to March, with competition running Saturday mornings and training on Tuesdays and Thursdays afternoon.
“Our club strives to create a family-friendly environment, and we want our kids and parents to walk way each week feeling happy and excited about being involved,” Mr Gibson said.
“Our doors are always open to parent helpers, volunteers, coaches, sponsors and new athletes.”
