A proposed large scale battery energy storage project west of Gladstone is moving through the planning process, with developers arguing it could provide economic opportunities for local communities while supporting Queensland’s growing renewable energy network.
The proposed East End Battery Energy Storage System, planned for rural land near East End and south of Mount Larcom, would have a capacity of 500 megawatts and 2,000 megawatt hours, making it one of the larger battery projects proposed for the region. While batteries do not always attract the same attention as major industrial developments, projects like this are becoming an increasingly important part of Australia’s energy future. As more renewable energy enters the electricity grid, large scale batteries are needed to store power when supply is high and release it when demand increases.
